Where to stay in Rio de Janeiro: the best areas
Ideal for: CouplesFamiliesOn a budgetSolo

Contents
In short: for a first visit, stay in Copacabana, on the most famous beach, with the metro. For couples, Ipanema or Leblon, more upmarket; for charm and views, Santa Teresa; for local life, Botafogo. The South Zone (Zona Sul) has most of the accommodation for visitors.
Understanding Rio in two minutes
Rio stretches between the sea, Guanabara Bay and forest-covered hills. The South Zone lines up the beach districts: Botafogo on the bay, then Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon facing the ocean. Above them rise Corcovado and its Christ the Redeemer; at the mouth of the bay, Sugarloaf Mountain. The historic centre and the bohemian district of Santa Teresa lie further north. The metro links the centre to the beaches.
The right area for your trip
First visit and beach: Copacabana
The most famous beach, its promenade with wave-patterned mosaics and plenty of hotels in every category. Well served by the metro, Copacabana is handy for sightseeing and for New Year’s Eve on the beach.
Upmarket and beach: Ipanema and Leblon
More upmarket beaches below the Two Brothers hills, restaurants, shops and sunsets from the Arpoador point. Ideal for couples; Leblon is quieter and more residential.
Charm and views: Santa Teresa
A bohemian hilltop district with cobbled lanes, artists’ studios and old houses overlooking the bay. The little tram (bondinho) climbs up from the centre. Further from the beaches: check how you’ll get around in the evening.
Local life: Botafogo
Between the centre and the beaches, Botafogo offers bars, restaurants and views of Sugarloaf Mountain, with a more local feel. Well served by the metro.
Getting to Rio de Janeiro
Galeão International Airport is about 23 km from Copacabana: allow around an hour by road depending on traffic, by taxi, ride-hailing or bus. Santos-Dumont airport, downtown, mainly handles domestic flights. A booked transfer saves haggling on arrival.
Our booking tips
- Book early for Carnival and New Year: prices rise sharply and minimum stays are often required.
- Check the street and the floor: a well-lit street close to the beach is more pleasant in the evening.
- Check the air conditioning: summers are hot and humid.
- Read recent reviews about the area and safety.
- Choose free cancellation when it is offered.
Once you’re there
Go up Corcovado and Sugarloaf Mountain early in the morning or late in the day, and keep valuables to a minimum at the beach.
