Botafogo Bay and Corcovado, with Christ the Redeemer, seen from Sugarloaf Mountain
Contents

In short: Rio is lived between sea and mountains. Head up to Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf Mountain, enjoy Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, wander Santa Teresa and Lapa, breathe in Tijuca Forest. Keep an eye on your belongings, as in any big city.

Christ the Redeemer

Atop Corcovado, Christ the Redeemer overlooks the city and the bay. Go early in the morning for the light and fewer crowds; the little rack railway climbs through the forest.

Sugarloaf Mountain

The cable car climbs in two stages to Sugarloaf Mountain, with spectacular views over Guanabara Bay, Copacabana and the Christ. Ideal at sunset.

Copacabana, Ipanema and Arpoador

The legendary Copacabana and Ipanema beaches are enjoyed on foot along the promenade or on the sand. Between the two, Arpoador rock is the sunset meeting point.

Santa Teresa, Lapa and the Selarón Steps

A bohemian hilltop district, Santa Teresa and its little tram lead towards Lapa, its arches and nightlife, and the Selarón Steps covered in colourful tiles.

Nature and the stadium

The Botanical Garden and Tijuca Forest, one of the world’s great urban forests, offer waterfalls and trails. Football fans will tour the Maracanã, or catch a match there.
