The Rozenhoedkaai canal and the Belfry of Bruges
Contents

In short: in Bruges, stay overnight: the city is magical in the evening and morning, once the day-trippers have gone. The historic centre, around the Markt and the Burg, puts everything within walking distance. For more peace, the area around the Minnewater (Lake of Love) and the Beguinage. For a short trip by train, near the station.

Bruges in two minutes

The historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is ringed by canals. In the middle, the Markt and its belfry, then the Burg square. To the south, the Beguinage and the Minnewater, then the station. Everything is done on foot or by canal boat; a car is useless in the centre.

The right area for your trip

First visit: the historic centre (Markt and Burg)

At the foot of the belfry, between squares, canals and lanes: hotels in old houses, B&Bs and small apartments. Perfect for a weekend for two.

Peace and romance: around the Minnewater

Near the Beguinage and the Minnewater, a few minutes’ walk from the centre. Quiet in the evening, with walks by the water.

Arriving by train: near the station

Handy for arriving and leaving by train, about twenty minutes’ walk from the centre or by bus. Newer hotels, often easier with luggage.
