When to go

Vietnam is very long, and the climate changes from north to south:

  • North (Hanoi, Ha Long, Sapa): spring and autumn are most pleasant; winter is cool.
  • Centre (Hue, Hoi An): February to August; the rain and typhoon season mainly affects autumn.
  • South (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong): hot all year, with a rainy season from May to October.

Entry requirements

French citizens, among others, are visa-exempt for 45 days (extended until March 2028). For other nationalities or longer stays, apply for an e-visa on the official Vietnamese government website; beware of intermediary sites.

Arriving and getting around

  • Hanoi: Noi Bai airport is about an hour from the centre depending on traffic; taxis, ride-hailing, buses and pre-booked transfers.
  • North to south: frequent domestic flights, the Reunification train (slow but scenic), night buses.
  • In town: ride-hailing apps (car or scooter); to cross the street, walk slowly and steadily.

Money, internet and practicalities

  • Currency: the dong. Cash is still widely used; cards are accepted in hotels and restaurants in big cities.
  • Internet: install a travel eSIM before you leave.

What to see in Vietnam

  • Hanoi: the Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake, the Temple of Literature, street food.
  • Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay, on a cruise from Hanoi.
  • And also: Ninh Binh, Sapa, Hue, Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta.
