In short: in Nouakchott, don’t miss the fishing port in the late afternoon, when the colourful pirogues come back, then the fish market. Wander the main market, visit the National Museum, and keep a day or two for the Banc d’Arguin, north of the city.
The fishing port
This is the liveliest sight in town: on the beach, hundreds of fishermen bring in the colourful pirogues, haul the nets and unload the catch among the fish traders. Come in the late afternoon, when the boats return. Always ask before photographing someone, and don’t swim here: currents can be strong.
The fish market
Right next to the port, the day’s catch is sorted and sold on the spot: a window onto everyday life in the capital.
The main market
Marché Capitale, the city’s largest: fabrics, colourful veils (melhfa), crafts, spices and everyday goods. A good place for souvenirs, taking time to discuss prices.
The National Museum
Modest but useful for understanding the country’s history, its nomadic cultures and ancient sites, before heading into the desert.
The beaches
The coast stretches as far as the eye can see north and south of the city. The beaches are lovely for a sunset walk, but the ocean can be rough: ask before swimming.
