Where to stay in Cairo: the best areas for your trip

In short: in Cairo, location changes everything, because journeys are long. For peace and quiet, stay in Zamalek, on an island in the Nile; for comfort and views, along the Nile banks (Garden City, the corniche); for a tight budget and buzz, downtown; for a short stay focused on the pyramids, Giza. You can also combine two bases depending on your plans.
Understanding Cairo in two minutes
Cairo is a megacity crossed by the Nile. At its heart lie downtown (Wust El Balad) and Tahrir Square, with the Egyptian Museum. On the river is the island of Zamalek. Along the east bank, Garden City and the corniche line up the big hotels. To the east are Islamic Cairo and Coptic Cairo. To the west, across the river, Giza, its pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum. Traffic is very heavy: allow time for every journey.
The right area for your trip
Calm and cafés: Zamalek
On an island in the Nile, Zamalek is a quieter, leafy residential district with cafés, restaurants, galleries and embassies. Ideal for couples or a relaxing stay while staying central.
Comfort and Nile views: Garden City and the corniche
The Nile banks are home to the big hotels, often with river views. Central and comfortable, it’s a good choice for families or a stress-free first visit.
Budget and buzz: downtown
Around Tahrir Square, downtown (Wust El Balad) is very lively and noisy, with cheaper accommodation and early 20th-century buildings. Handy for the Egyptian Museum and the metro.
Waking up to the pyramids: Giza
Near the Giza plateau, some hotels have views of the pyramids. Handy for a short stay focused on the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum, but far from downtown and Islamic Cairo.
Getting to Cairo
Cairo International Airport lies north-east of the city. Ride-hailing apps or a transfer booked in advance are the simplest options; allow plenty of time depending on traffic, especially to Giza.
Our booking tips
- Choose based on your plans: Giza for the pyramids, downtown or Zamalek for the rest of the city.
- Look at the total price: taxes and service charges are sometimes added to the displayed rate.
- Read recent reviews about noise, air conditioning and service.
- Ask for an airport transfer if the hotel offers one, especially for a night arrival.
- Choose free cancellation when it is offered.
Once you’re there
Visit early in the morning: it’s very hot for much of the year. Covering clothes are expected in religious sites.
