The pyramids of Giza in the desert, near Cairo
Contents

In short: In Cairo, antiquity and the living city stand side by side. See the Giza pyramids and the Sphinx, the treasures of the Grand Egyptian Museum, Islamic Cairo and the Khan el-Khalili souk, Coptic Cairo, and a felucca on the Nile at sunset. Visit early in the morning: it’s hot much of the year.

The Giza pyramids and the Sphinx

On the Giza plateau, the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure and the Sphinx make up the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing. Arrive at opening time, with water and a hat.

The Grand Egyptian Museum

Officially opened on 1 November 2025 near the pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum displays vast collections, including the treasures of Tutankhamun. Allow at least half a day.

Islamic Cairo and Khan el-Khalili

Saladin’s Citadel and its mosque overlook the city. Below, al-Muizz street, its mosques and madrasas lead to the Khan el-Khalili souk, to browse, haggle and sip tea. Cover up in mosques.

Coptic Cairo

In Old Cairo, the Hanging Church and the Coptic churches, along with the Ben Ezra Synagogue, tell the city’s long Christian and Jewish history.

A felucca on the Nile

At sunset, a ride on a felucca, a traditional sailing boat, offers a peaceful break in the heart of the megacity.

Day trips from Cairo

  • Saqqara and Djoser’s Step Pyramid.
  • Dahshur and its Bent and Red pyramids.
  • Luxor, about an hour’s flight or a night train away, for the temples and the Valley of the Kings.

Getting around

  • Ride-hailing apps are simplest for most journeys.
  • The metro serves the centre; road traffic is very heavy.
  • A driver for the day is handy for Giza, Saqqara and Dahshur.
