Things to do in Luxor: must-sees and where to stay

Contents
In short: Luxor, ancient Thebes, is visited in two parts on either side of the Nile. On the east bank, the temples of Karnak and Luxor; on the west bank, the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut’s temple and the Colossi of Memnon. Set off early to avoid the heat, and consider a Nile cruise to Aswan.
Karnak
A vast temple complex, Karnak impresses with its Hypostyle Hall and giant columns. Allow several hours, ideally early in the morning.
Luxor Temple and the Avenue of Sphinxes
In the middle of town, Luxor Temple is superb when lit up at night. The Avenue of Sphinxes, a long way lined with statues, links it to Karnak.
The Valley of the Kings
On the west bank, the Valley of the Kings holds the pharaohs’ rock-cut tombs, decorated with paintings whose colours are still vivid. The entry ticket covers several tombs; some, like Tutankhamun’s, require a separate ticket.
Hatshepsut’s temple and the Colossi of Memnon
Set against the cliffs of Deir el-Bahari, the terraced temple of Hatshepsut is one of the most spectacular in Egypt. On the way, the two Colossi of Memnon watch over the plain.
A sunrise balloon flight
Hot-air balloon flights over the west bank at dawn offer an unforgettable view of the temples and the valley. Choose a reputable operator.
