Understanding Sydney in two minutes

Sydney is built around its huge harbour. North of the centre are The Rocks and Circular Quay, at the foot of the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge; to the south, the CBD (business district) and Darling Harbour. To the east lie Surry Hills, Darlinghurst and Potts Point, then the beaches of Bondi and Coogee. Across the harbour is Manly, reached by ferry. Trains, buses, the metro and ferries are paid with a card or contactless.

The right area for your trip

First visit: The Rocks and Circular Quay

Sydney’s oldest neighbourhood, with historic lanes and pubs, faces the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. Circular Quay is where ferries leave for Manly and the harbour bays. The ideal area for a first visit, with spectacular views.

Practical and families: the CBD and Darling Harbour

Shops, museums, an aquarium and waterfront restaurants: the CBD and Darling Harbour are central and practical for families, well served by train and light rail.

Cafés and restaurants: Surry Hills

A few minutes south-east of the centre, Surry Hills is known for its cafés, restaurants and streets of Victorian terraces. Ideal for living like a local.

Nightlife: Darlinghurst and Potts Point

Bars, restaurants and nightlife, a short walk from the centre and the Botanic Garden.

Beach and surf: Bondi and Coogee

Famous Bondi beach, its surfers and the coastal walk to Coogee: ideal for solo travellers, couples or a longer stay. Allow for a bus ride to the centre.

Family beach: Manly

A ferry ride from Circular Quay, Manly offers big beaches, a relaxed vibe and walks. The ferry trip, with views of the Opera House, is a treat in itself.

Getting to Sydney

From Sydney Airport, the train reaches the city centre in minutes; a surcharge applies at the airport stations. Contactless payment works at the gates. For timetables and fares, check the official websites. A private transfer takes you straight to your hotel, handy after a long flight.

Our booking tips

  1. Book very early for New Year’s Eve and the southern summer (December to February).
  2. Choose based on your plans: the city for sightseeing, the beach for relaxing.
  3. Check the nearest station or ferry wharf: ferries are proper public transport.
  4. Protect yourself from the sun and swim between the flags on patrolled beaches.
  5. Choose free cancellation when it is offered.
