The Faidherbe Bridge over the Senegal River in Saint-Louis at sunset
Contents

In short: Former capital of French West Africa, Saint-Louis is a calm, photogenic town whose island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stroll among the colonial houses with balconies, cross the Faidherbe Bridge, discover the pirogues of Guet Ndar, head out to the Langue de Barbarie, and watch birds in Djoudj National Park.

The island of Saint-Louis

On a narrow island in the Senegal River, the old town lines up colonial houses with balconies, grid streets and colourful façades. A horse-drawn carriage ride is a pleasant way to see it.

The Faidherbe Bridge

A long metal bridge linking the island to the mainland, the Faidherbe Bridge is the town’s emblem, superb at sunset.

Guet Ndar

On the sand spit facing the ocean, Guet Ndar is one of the largest fishing districts in West Africa. The return of the colourful pirogues in the late afternoon is a striking sight; ask before taking photos.

The Langue de Barbarie

Between river and ocean, the Langue de Barbarie is a long protected sand spit where many birds nest. It is explored by pirogue.

Music and festivals

Saint-Louis lives to the beat of music: its jazz festival, usually in spring, draws musicians from around the world (check the dates each year).
