The pink façade of the Hawa Mahal, the Palace of Winds, in Jaipur
Contents

In short: Jaipur, Rajasthan’s Pink City, is the third stop on the Golden Triangle. Admire the façade of the Hawa Mahal, visit the City Palace and Jantar Mantar, head up to Amber Fort, watch the sunset from Nahargarh, and wander the old city’s bazaars.

The Hawa Mahal

The Palace of the Winds and its pink façade with hundreds of small windows allowed women of the court to watch the street without being seen. The most famous view is from the cafés opposite, early in the morning.

The City Palace and Jantar Mantar

In the heart of the old city, the City Palace, the maharajas’ residence, combines courtyards, museums and decorated gates. Next door, Jantar Mantar, an astronomical observatory with giant instruments, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Amber Fort

On the hills north of the city, Amber Fort unfolds palaces, courtyards and a hall of mirrors. Walk up or take a jeep; avoid elephant rides.

Nahargarh and the Jal Mahal

Nahargarh Fort, on the ridge above Jaipur, offers one of the best sunset views. On the way to Amber, the Jal Mahal, a palace sitting on a lake, is photographed from the shore.

The bazaars

Block-printed textiles, jewellery, gems, slippers and spices: the Pink City’s bazaars are a delight. Haggle with a smile and beware of touts.
