Amman spreads over many hills, so you will often get around by taxi. The city is Jordan’s gateway and a good base for trips north and to the Dead Sea.

What to see in and around Amman

  • The Citadel (Jabal al-Qal’a): the Temple of Hercules, the Umayyad Palace and city views;
  • the Roman theatre, downtown;
  • the souks and Al-Husseini Mosque, in Al-Balad;
  • Rainbow Street, with its cafés and terraces;
  • Jerash, one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the Middle East, as a day trip;
  • the Dead Sea, to float in some of the saltiest water on Earth.

Getting to Amman

Queen Alia Airport lies south of the city. The Airport Express bus serves west Amman (as far as the 7th Circle) and the north bus station; taxis and pre-booked transfers take you straight to your hotel.
