In short: for a first visit, stay in Downtown, at the foot of the Burj Khalifa. For the beach, Dubai Marina, JBR or Palm Jumeirah; for the souk atmosphere and a tighter budget, Old Dubai (Deira, Bur Dubai). Dubai is very spread out: choose a hotel near a metro station or a beach, depending on your plans.
Understanding Dubai in two minutes
Dubai stretches for dozens of kilometres along the Gulf. In the north-east, around the Creek, lies Old Dubai (Deira and Bur Dubai) with its souks. In the centre is Downtown, with the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall, next to Business Bay. Along the sea is Jumeirah, then, to the south-west, Dubai Marina, JBR and Palm Jumeirah. The metro’s red line links the airport, Old Dubai, Downtown and the Marina; elsewhere, people mostly get around by taxi or ride-hailing.
The right area for your trip
First visit: Downtown
At the foot of the Burj Khalifa, next to Dubai Mall and the fountain, Downtown is the most spectacular area, well connected by metro. Hotels are often upscale; views of the tower are a real bonus.
More affordable next to Downtown: Business Bay
Right next door, along the canal, Business Bay has newer hotels, often cheaper than Downtown, with the same proximity to the Burj Khalifa (by taxi or on foot depending on the address).
Beach and buzz: Dubai Marina and JBR
Modern towers, a waterfront promenade, restaurants and the public beach at JBR: Dubai Marina is ideal for combining beach and nightlife. The tram and metro serve the area.
Relaxation and families: Palm Jumeirah
The palm-shaped artificial island is packed with big hotels with private beaches, pools and water parks. Ideal for a relaxing stay or a family holiday, slightly out of the way (monorail and taxis).
Beaches and calm: Jumeirah
Along Jumeirah Beach, near the Burj Al Arab and the public beaches, hotels and villas are quieter, between the city and the sea.
Culture and budget: Old Dubai
Around the Creek, Deira and Bur Dubai have the gold and spice souks, the historic Al Fahidi district and abra crossings. Hotels are often much more affordable, and the metro reaches the airport in minutes.
Getting to Dubai
The metro’s red line serves Terminals 1 and 3 of Dubai International Airport directly and runs to Old Dubai, Downtown and the Marina. Taxis are plentiful outside. For timetables and fares, check the official websites. A private transfer takes you straight to your hotel, handy if you arrive at night.
Our booking tips
- Choose based on your plans: Downtown for sightseeing, the Marina or the Palm for the beach. Taxi rides between them are long at rush hour.
- Check the total price: the Tourism Dirham fee and service charges are often added to the base rate.
- Look at the pool and beach access: during the hot months, it is essential.
- Book early for winter (November to March) and the festive season, the high season.
- Make the most of summer for gentler rates, if the heat doesn’t put you off.
